DESCRIPTION: A captivating pair of lacquered figural candle pricks, each in the form of a smiling attendant with hand on hip, wearing a banded hat and holding aloft a candle dish. The figures themselves are hand crafted of solid, dark brown lacquer around a wire frame, while the flared bases are wood blocks covered in brown lacquer. Superb Chinese cinnabar plate edged with metal. Six character stylized Qianlong reign mark (nien-hao) in a square cartouche to the reverse reads Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi or Made in the Great Qing Qianlong Period, but most likely 19th century. The reverse is also carved with attributes of the Daoist Immortals. Excellent condition. The carving is deep and the edges sharp. Darker color seen in our first two images is accurate. This rare Xipi lacquer simulates marble and is translated as "rhinoceros skin". This example exhibits unusually bright and lively colors and is very desirable with it's dry lacquer construction.
