The expression on the full, rounded face of this late Qing Chinese Buddha is both tranquil and wise, and a slight smile adds to the enigma. The forehead is marked with the third eye of spiritual wisdom, the urna, and the bare chest is marked with a swastika, an ancient emblem derived from Sanskrit, that means "so be it" or resignation to what is. Exceptional gold on lacquer carving in the round, of mythological lion or temple guardian, together with a pair of cubs, resting on rectangular plinth. The figure dates from the 19th century of China's Qing dynasty. Workmanship and style associated with reign of Daoguang (1821-1850). Fine condition with one old repair to neck of one cub.

Guanyin, Chinese bodhisattva of mercy, is finely carved in huanghauli. The graceful, slender lines of this early 20th century carving put emphasis on the grain and natural sheen of the rare wood. Immediately recognizable as Guanyin from the high headpiece, the figure wears a plain robe and no jewelry, unlike most Chinese images of the goddess. A finely done representation of Guanyin, Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, this figure is carved of hwa yong, a slow-growing hardwood. The carving was coated first with red lacquer, which was then covered over in most areas with dark brown lacquer. The red color was retained to define the inner folds of the robe and to focus attention on the delicately carved hands and feet.
