A fascinating utility object from Nepal, this long, curved slicer is anchored into the jaw of an incised bronze mountain cat. The strong, sinuous silhouette of this unusual late 19th/early 20th century tool places it in the realm of folk art. Its previous owner, a Nepali, told us it was used as a fruit and vegetable slicer--the animal placed on a flat surface, held steady with a palm across its back, and the fruit sliced across the sharp inside edge of the blade. It is an odd implement, unlike a... Click for details

A rough but extremely old Himalayan mask, just the eyes are wide open and underlined by a thin carved line, the mouth just shows carved teeth, the noose is flat . Part of the face of the mask has been eaten by insects. The bottom of the mask shows either a goiter or an handle, however this mask was bearing holes on the sides and one this hole is now worn out. This mask has been for sure collected from communities where Bothia people are mixed with hindu casts in the very remote district of Simik... Click for details

This is a very unusual early 18th century depiction of Shiva and his consort Parvati. My best guess is that it is a form of Khandoba/Mhalsa from western India. Although it is consistent with Khandoba in that Shiva is carrying a sword (broken off many years ago) and the two are on a steed, ths murti is unusual in that the pair are riding sidesaddle and the steed is not a horse, but a Nandi! As you can see, this is quite a special piece, and it has a nice brassy lustre with both faces worn compl... Click for details

A very attractive pair of 18th century bronzes of Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, cast in Karnataka. Vishnu is shown holding his chakra and battle axe, and Lakshmi is holding her lotus flower. The two bronzes were most likely cast and worshipped together as they have the same coppery patina and same degree of devotional wear, as well as similar amounts of fine detail.Height 10.3 cm (Vishnu) and 9.3 cm (Lakshmi), width ... Another complete flat and straight panel figuring one of the two most famous deities protecting Tharu villages in the South West of Nepal. These panels are fixed deeply into the ground and kept in sanctuary either in special huts or in open field. On this one we can see clearly how deep into the ground it was inserted Very impressive signs of deep water erosion, very great age at least 100 to 150 years but very possibly over 200 y for this one considering that it is made with extremely hard w...
