This is a very early piece, stylistically similar to sutra covers dating to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. We believe that this dates from the same period.

The base measures 9-1/2" (W) x 7"(Depth) x 4" height and with the back the piece is 16-1/2 high. The condition of the carving is good. The bottom of the base was split some considerable time ago and was reinforced with an additional thin piece of wood, ... Click for details

$650
Burl wood is especially favored by Tibetans for their tsampa bowls. This one is especially well-figured.

It is especially difficult to assign a date to an items whose form has been so consistent for generations. We've dated this to "pre 1900" but it is likely very much older.

10-1/2 inches in diameter and 7-1/2 inches in height. ... Click for details

Ringas come in many styles and qualities. This embroidered one is of a quality not often found. Dating from the 18th century it might have been made in China for the Tibetan market or in Tibet itself. Ringas like this were often displayed on statues rather than having been used by lamas. That might account for the excellent condition.

For comparison see plate 73 from Treasures of Tibetan Art from the Newark Museum.... Click for details

A cotton thangka of Green Tara, circa the 19th century probably from eastern Tibet. The central deity, Green Tara, is surrounded by the 20 other Taras in different colors. Green Tara has blue eyes; her right hand is in the gesture of boon granting, her right foot rests on a pink lotus flower. Each of her hands holds a blue lotus flower. She wears a red blouse and red and gray sari, with gold highlights. She sits on a white half-moon disc, set atop a multi-colored lotus throne. At the topmost cen... Click for details

Tibetan Gau (small personal shrine), the front having a profuse silver repousse’ design in a floral motif, surrounding an opening to the interior where a small Buddha or devotional object would be kept. Not a made-for-tourist piece, but a genuine Tibetan devotional object, evidenced by the covering of soot from the open fires of Tibetan huts. Even the interior has been blackened by years of use in this type of setting. Edges of the case are made from copper with a hand chiseled border design ... Click for details

Bronze Tibetan Phurba with Iron Core

Himalayan Antiques

$3,200
Heavy copper alloy phurba with an iron blade and core. It is very difficult to date phurbas since what little that has been published about them contains few age references. Our guess is that it was made well before the beginning of the 19th century.

Important for the power gathering use of the phurba is the iron core and triple blade which this one has. The hole for hanging is quite unusual in a metal phurba.... Click for details

Ganesh Antique Ritual Bell (Ghanta) from Nepal
Antiques: Regional Art: Asian: Indian Subcontinent: Himalayas Pre 1800: item #297736

Himalayan Antiques

$450
Bell ringing is an act of daily worship for both the Buddhists and Hindus of Nepal. With a figure of Ganesh under a canopy of five nagas it is safe to assume that this bell is from the Hindu community. The wear and patina are consistent with great age, though it is extremely difficult to date metals with any certainty.

The bell is 4" in diameter at the base and is 9" in height. It is in very good condition.
