Circa 19th century, probably earlier, mandala of multi-armed Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, painted on cotton in either Nepal or Tibet. Avalokiteshvara is in the center of the mandala, with many arms holding different implements, and eleven heads, the topmost of which is Amitabha. His main hands are folded on his chest. Ringas come in many styles and qualities. This embroidered one is of a quality not often found. Dating from the 18th century it might have been made in China for the Tibetan market or in Tibet itself. Ringas like this were often displayed on statues rather than having been used by lamas. That might account for the excellent condition.
