A small and very elegant ikebana basket executed in a complex and highly sophisticated style of weaving by the important bamboo artist Tanabe Chikuhosai I.* On the back side a woven ring for hanging the piece. Fully signed. Original and signed kiri-box. Dating from the Taisho period, ca. 1920. H. 32 cm W 13.5 cm. Condition: Perfect.

Japanese fine skillful handled basket is woven with smoked bamboo in traditional shape. Artist name, Gengensai, is signed with a chiseled signature on the bottom. Although we have no information about the artist. This Ikebana basket with custom-made copper container. Measurements about : 15 3/4" (40 cm) tall and 15 3/4" (40 cm) in diameter. There are some small scratches with the copper container on the inside as shown in the photos.

This simple but elegant bamboo tea ceremony flower basket is beautifully woven in the 'karamono' fine tight weave tradition. Lusciously round with a plum wood root handle, it exhibits all the skill and workmanship of a master although it is not signed. The mat plaiting, 'gozame-ami' technique is exceptional. c.1920. Stunning richly patinaed antique Japanese bamboo flower basket from the turn of the century c.1900. This 'wagumi' Japanese style basketry is the epitome of the new free wheeling style that emerged at the end of the Meiji Period c.1868-1912.
