Japanese early 20th century bamboo flower basket. The long slender basket form is woven with bamboo strips of varying widths. The handle is made from stalks of whole bamboo. The basket is unsigned. The basket measures 16 1/4" tall and is 4 1/2" in diameter.

Japanese 19th Century hanging bamboo flower basket. Magnificent bamboo basket made by bamboo artist, WADA WAICHISAI I (1815-1901). The basket is loosely woven and is made to be hung. The base of the basket has a copper colored metal insert. Signed Waichisai sei on bottom. The basket measures 14" tall and 11 1/4" in diameter.

The basket is crafted with a vertical diagonal weave from both wide and narrow splints in contrasting colors. DESCRIPTION: An early 20th century Japanese ikebana basket with an open-weave ovoid body of a reddish-black split bamboo. A lighter colored smoked bamboo runs through the weave in a random pattern around the body, and a wrapped bamboo handle is attached. Wonderful old patina with no losses detected. A 4” high x 4” diameter copper liner is included. DIMENSIONS: 14 ¾” high x 9 ½” diameter.

This expressive freestyle Japanese basket for flower arrangements (“hanakago”) is woven from both thin and thick split bamboo strips and likely dates to the early 20th century. An unidentified three-character signature is carved into one of the bamboo strips on the base.
