Height 46 cm.
Intricately woven with six pattern changes, each change is used twice resulting in twelve distinct bands. The two free hanging loop handles and attachment rings use two other changes. This makes a total of eight different weaving patterns. Adding to the visual interest of this basket is the use of five different widths of split bamboo. The outline shape and the free hanging loop handles are inspired from Chinese bronze vases of the Ming Dynasty. ... Click for details

Japanese 19th century. Meiji period
This ikebana container was made from bamboo tubes cut in half lengthwise then turned around before being lashed together side to side with vines. This exposed the inner nodes which now are an important part of the design. Only a few other examples of this type are known in collections outside Japan

This early 1900’s handbag has been finely woven of narrow threads of rattan creating a shell –like pattern. All sides have been trimmed with wide strips of bamboo . It has metal fittings and the interior has been lined with a floral fabric. It is in good condition except for the lining which shows years of wear, minor damage to the plaiting in one small section on the top, and a missing pin to secure the latch.
