Almost identical to the basket on the cover of the Japanese flower basket bible, "Containing Beauty: Japanese Bamboo Flower Baskets" , this antique Japanese basket is a classic example of one of the the main insertion techniques employed in the Meiji Era (c.1867-1912). Called 'midare' in Japanese, the technique involves inserting wide strips diagonally into the body. This particular weave is the first of its kind Kodo Arts has seen in 25 years of collecting. Worth a close look. Strips of bamboo are wound around the base held in place by underlying graduated descending vertical strips of rattan creating a most remarkable effect.
