Antique woven bamboo basket, known as hanakago, designed for use in ikebana, the Japanese art of floral display and arrangement. This basket dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900), and is in good to excellent condition. The weave is tight and detailed, and the handle is crafted from burled keyaki, or shizen-boku. Chikuyosai is known for his delicate weaves and dark bamboo. He is mentioned in Bamboo Masterworks, Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection p.82. Chikuyosai was quite active in the Taisho-Early Showa Periods 1900-1930. This basket has a simple but elegant weave with lustrious corners and his trademark dark bamboo. c.1915. Made from 'susudake' smoked farmhouse old bamboo, this basket features a 'gozame-ami' mat plaiting with vertical bamboo strips inserted. The rim uses an 'atebuchi' technique in which wide strips of bamboo encircle the rim for an aesthetic boost. The four legs have insect stiches as well as the handle inserts. Legend. c.1900.
