Antique woven bamboo basket, known as hanakago, designed for use in ikebana, the Japanese art of floral display and arrangement. This basket dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900), and is in good to excellent condition. The weave is tight and detailed, and the handle is crafted from burled keyaki, or shizen-boku. Chikuyosai is known for his delicate weaves and dark bamboo. He is mentioned in Bamboo Masterworks, Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection p.82. Made from 'susudake' smoked farmhouse old bamboo, this basket features a 'gozame-ami' mat plaiting with vertical bamboo strips inserted.
