This piece has lots of cachet with its slender silhouette and heavy carved roof. It was originally a shrine but now we find that it's also a great display case. The roof isn't permanantly attached but it's sound and sturdy and will present heavy items without wobbling.

In artistic representations Fudou is generally shown either alone or flanked by Kongara and Seitaka to create the Fudou Triad (fudou sanzon) as represented. There are few examples of him accompanied by all eight of these attendants (Hachidai Douji). The dark patination achieved by the original polychrome colors has resulted into a shibui expression of the image. The Kohai or Mandorla is resting on Fudo Himself and has ... Click for details

This is a great mingei piece. It's a fly whisk with (probably deer or badger hair on a gnarled stick with several burls. It also has a little netsuke in the shape of a mukugyo, or wooden temple bell. An internet search for "hossu" provides information about the history of the tool, and its association with meditation. It can whisk away literal flies or nagging intrusions on one's meditation. This is an older piece dating from the Meiji period or earlier. The hair is getting a bit thin on t... Click for details
