This large and important gilt wood figure of Amida Nyorai, the guide to Western Paradise, dates to the mid-Edo period, 18th century. The figure is standing on a tiered gilt lotus base with his left foot slightly forward. His right hand is raised and the left hand lowered in the gesture known as “raigo-in” (welcoming to paradise), with both palms turned outward, the thumb and index finger on each hand forming a circle. Large zushi of square shape with double doors. Outside black lacquer and bronze hard ware, finely engraved with meandering flowers, inside gold lacquer.
Inside a sculpture of the deity Benten, or Benzaiten, in her appearance with eight arms. In her hands she holds sword, jewel, bow, halberd and wheel. Other attributes are missing. Japanese wooden, blacklacquer Butsudan containing a RARE STANDING BUDDHA in Vitarka mudra; with an mandorla of swirling clouds and shining light. The Buddha figure is in perfect condition, no breaks or repairs. The bronze engraved hinges and clasps are original and in perfect order. Beautiful faded golden patina. The black lacquer of the case is in an unrestored condition with no loss or chips. There is some fading to the sides and back of the case. Height is 9.5 inches.Circa: Meiji era.
