Inside is a fabulous Edo Period c.1850 standing wood sculpture of "Juuichimen Kannon" the Eleven-Headed Kannon, god of mercy and compassion. This kannon has a crown of tiny bodhisattva heads with the head of the buddha at the top. A small standing image of Amida Buddha is in the front of the crown as well. 19th century Japanese wooden nyoi - a Buddhist scepter with widening ends and a hooked finial. Does not photograph well. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship and transmission of knowledge. Dense fruitwood with beautiful texture, elegant carving, wonderful patina and sheen to the surface from being handled. Signed BAIDO on the back, old silk cord. Very pleasant to the touch. Great subtle piece for scholar’s table, or a practicing Buddhist. Length 15 3/4 inches.

Antique Japanese Buddhist temple bell stand, known at Kedei. This stand is from a temple in Western Japan, and dates to the Taisho-Period (1912-1926). It is constructed of wood, with red lacquer and gold accented carving in a cloud or wave motif. This stand is used to hold a Keman, a flat bell used in Buddhist worship ceremonies.
