Antique Japanese black lacquered cypress wood altar with gold leaf inside. Metal fittings are of bronze. Inside is a fabulous Edo Period c.1850 standing wood sculpture of "Juuichimen Kannon" the Eleven-Headed Kannon, god of mercy and compassion. This kannon has a crown of tiny bodhisattva heads with the head of the buddha at the top. A small standing image of Amida Buddha is in the front of the crown as well. 19th century Japanese wooden nyoi - a Buddhist scepter with widening ends and a hooked finial. Does not photograph well. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship and transmission of knowledge. Dense fruitwood with beautiful texture, elegant carving, wonderful patina and sheen to the surface from being handled. Signed BAIDO on the back, old silk cord. Very pleasant to the touch. Great subtle piece for scholar’s table, or a practicing Buddhist. Length 15 3/4 inches.

Unusually large antique Japanese carved wooden statue of Fudo-Myo, dating to the late Edo-Period (c.1850). This impressive piece consists of three components; a heavy wooden base, the Fudo statue, and the aureole of flames typical to depictions of Fudo. The statue and aureole feature pegs on the bottom which fit into corresponding slots in the base to secure them. Beautiful antique Japanese Zushi, a small shrine used to house Buddhist worship deities. This item dates to the early Meiji-Period (c.1880), and is constructed from lacquered wood. Lovely antique gold gilt lacquer on Japanese cypress wood. These types of `Amida Nyorai` (Japanese) buddhas were commissioned by temple followers and donated to temples to earn merit or to pray for someones well being. From the inside of a huge buddhist temple 'butsudan' or enclosed zen altar, this magnificently antique Japanese hand carved Meiji c.1880 gold gilt altar has intricately carved dragons on the sides and flowers on the front top.
