A delightfully curious little boy leans intently over his top. He wears a kimono with miniature kasuri pattern and has a shibori silk obi. His hair is real. He appears to be made of wood, with gofun or oyster paste on his head, hands and legs. There's a chip on his right foot and his left one has a crack. Rare Japanese wooden Kobe toy or “ningyo” (doll) in the form of a man wearing an oversized top hat. Early 20th century. The top of his hat unscrews to reveal a red compartment which holds three small handmade bone dice. His bone eyes protrude when the figure is moved, and his open mouth reveals a red tongue. His two wood arms are outstretched, and his right hand holds a bone wand. He is made of a richly grained hardwood which has an ebony brown finish, with an attractive original patina resultin... Very fine signed “Kantan Otoku” Noh mask(wooden). In Noh, Kantan Otoku is a young man who awakens from a dream about prosperity to realize the vanity of his life. Sometimes this mask is also used to portray a dashing god. Given its history, this mask was made to be very beautiful. Dates to later Meiji-taisho period.

This finely wooden carved face and hands are covered with Gofun. The doll wearing Chirimen silk Kimono. It would appear that the doll had something in his right hand. It is in very good condition with tiny scratch on the face. Measurements about : 3 3/8"(8.5cm) tall.

Dating to the late 18th/early 19th century, these rare and important small carved wooden figures represent one of the most elusive genres of antique Japanese doll (“ningyo”) known as Kamo ningyo. The figures are hand carved of willow wood, and scraps of silk and brocade fabric have been embedded and glued to create their clothing.
