A delightfully curious little boy leans intently over his top. He wears a kimono with miniature kasuri pattern and has a shibori silk obi. His hair is real. He appears to be made of wood, with gofun or oyster paste on his head, hands and legs. There's a chip on his right foot and his left one has a crack. Rare Japanese wooden Kobe toy or “ningyo” (doll) in the form of a man wearing an oversized top hat. Early 20th century. The top of his hat unscrews to reveal a red compartment which holds three small handmade bone dice. His bone eyes protrude when the figure is moved, and his open mouth reveals a red tongue. His two wood arms are outstretched, and his right hand holds a bone wand. He is made of a richly grained hardwood which has an ebony brown finish, with an attractive original patina resultin... Very fine signed “Kantan Otoku” Noh mask(wooden). In Noh, Kantan Otoku is a young man who awakens from a dream about prosperity to realize the vanity of his life. Sometimes this mask is also used to portray a dashing god. Given its history, this mask was made to be very beautiful. Dates to later Meiji-taisho period. Dimensions: 20/14cm.
