DESCRIPTION: Impressive Meiji Period (1886 – 1912) Japanese samurai doll, or musha ningyo, made for display on Boy’s Day which is celebrated annually in Japan on May 5. This seated samurai has wonderful detailing in the cotton and silk brocade costume, and is rendered in full armor with yoroi and kabuto. An old Japanese kimekomi doll of a small boy with outstretched right arm. The doll is an original kamo ningyo in that it is made of willow wood with the face and hands left unfinished. The hand on this doll has become slightly detached and is hanging from the sleeve at the rest - easily corrected.

Japanese 'gosho ningyo' dolls were named after Kyoto's Imperial Palace (the Gosho) where the emperor and empress resided. In Edo Period (17th and 18th century) when visitors came to the capital gosho ningyo were presented as gifts to feudal lords by members of the court nobility.
