An old Japanese kimekomi doll of a small boy with outstretched right arm. The doll is an original kamo ningyo in that it is made of willow wood with the face and hands left unfinished. The hand on this doll has become slightly detached and is hanging from the sleeve at the rest - easily corrected.
The doll measures 2 5/8" high by 3" wide by 1 7/8" deep - we date it to the mid to late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1890s. Very good condition with the exception of the loose hand, a chip to ... Click for details

Japanese antique Takeda doll from Chushingura, The 47 Ronin (masterless samurai). Takeda dolls were modeled after puppet and Kabuki Theater plays from the Edo Period (1603-1868). They are known for their exaggerated poses and facial expressions. This Takeda doll is unique and there are some with great quality. The sword on the doll indicates that he is a Samurai; it is a strange combination to a farmer's straw raincoat and hat. He has an old matchlock gun (hinawajyu) in his hand - only doll with... Antique Japanese samurai doll, a flag-bearer sitting on a chair, 15 inches tall to the top of his head. This is a popular retainer doll paired with a general doll for the Japanese Boy’s Day. All the retainer dolls are usually not handsome; some look quite funny contrary to the handsome general dolls. You can even see a size difference for some in the set; there will be a big handsome general doll and a small retainer doll with a funny face to enhance the difference. The armor and clothes on th...
