A fine Japanese porcelain dish with foliated rim, the interior painted in underglaze-blue, green, pink, iron-red and gilt with a flowering peony and a character mark on a iron-red ground, the reverse decorated with the classical tako-karakusa, an underglaze-blue three-character mark Génroku sei" (made by Génroku) on the base. The detail of each little boy on the interior of this shallow bowl is wonderful. Around the outside are cranes in flight. There is a small, original kiln blemish on outside of the bowl, but in no way does it detract from the piece. It measures 12" x 2 7/8" and dates about 1870.

Japan 19th century height 6.9cm width 5.2cm Of square form with fine crackle glaze. Decorated in overglaze green, red and gold. Long twisted branches of prunus in full bloom are accented with lower growing grasses and plants. The shoulder has a design of interlocking diamond shapes and leaves. The silver cover is pierced and incised with prunus flowers. Prunus in bloom would make this perfect for springtime use.
