Antique Japanese koro, or incense burner, fashioned in likeness of a shi shi, or foo dog. Meiji-Period (c.1900), Bizen earthenware. Bizen ceramics, or yaki, is unglazed, and has a distinctive bronzed patina that results from the natural wood-fired kilns, which have operated continuously for more than four centuries. A very delicately painted Satsuma kogo with a design of a small red bird perched on a branch of a budding floral tree in early spring. As is frequently the case, the artist also decorated the interior of the top of the kogo with a lovely floral spray. The foot has a gold signature of the noted Satsuma potters – “Kinkozan” – partially worn but still quite readable as a Kinkozan piece. The periphery of this scalloped Satsuma plate has a wide milflor border. In the center is a scene of geishas and young girls engaged in various activities. The diameter is 8.5" and it is about 1" deep. It dates about 1890 - 1900 and is in excellent condition, showing minimal to no wear.
