PLEASE INQUIRE

A wonderful small tokkuri, sake pourer, with a design of alternating vertical stipes in bronze/gold, turqouise and eggplant purple - with the much coveted Gosu blue mon of the Satsuma clan on the base - making it a late Edo or early Meiji piece at the latest. A series of interesting thick enamel and gold mons or reserves arranged in a random pattern on the body of the vase completed the picture. The piece is in excellent condition - there is a very tiny chip on the rim of the pourer th... Click for details

Lovely Japanese Satsuma chawan - this one has me puzzled - it seems modern in many ways, yet the use of the genuine gosu blue in the one crane and the waves on the side clearly say mid-Meiji in dating it - I have not been able to clearly identify the artist' signature - the is a possibility that it is Hattori-zo. At any rate, this is one really nice looking piece of Satsuma.

Beautiful chawan tea bowl - this one from the Sasaki collection per an old sticker on the bowl - very nice heavy overglaze enamel decoration of flowers - notched foot - celadon pooled glaze around the foot - I date it from the mid to late Meiji period - excellent condition - measures 4 1/4 diameter at the top, 1 1/2" dia. at the foot and is 3" high. No signature.

A really different Japanese Satsuma pouring pitcher - possibly a sake pitcher. One of the most unusual pieces I have ever had - check the very different shape of the handle - then there is this weird dog/wolf/ mythical animal baying at something - really quite unusual - excellent condition - interestingly, I did not thing there was a signature - however, when photographing it I found an impressed signature on the base - two characters - cannot quite make out the top one but clearly the bot... This highly decorative shallow bowl, a major product of the Seto kilns, depicts the encounter of a beautiful and elegant Japanese woman and fierce-looking bearded man with some sort of evil intent in mind. Oh, you know the story... Well, frankly I don't, but if I find out, I will write it in. Anyhow, the whole thing is illustrated in elaborate colored enamels and gilt on the finely potted body with a crackled glaze. The condition is excellent, with only one small firing bubble that has burst (s... Click for details

Stately and subtle, this tall vase exemplifies the virtues that have made Oribe stoneware favored by Japanese tea ceremonial connoisseurs and others for centuries. The soaring form and intentionally coarse surface make a monolithic background for the underglaze iron-oxide designs of weathered pinetrees on one side and the cavelike scene of "hanging persimmons" suspended from a slanted double border of latticework on the other. A green mantle of glaze engulfs the upper portion, a surprise of pu... Click for details

A truly beautiful Awata Satsuma sake pourer with spectacular decoration of four figures in thickly applied overglaze primary colors - very lovely combination of colors on the fine crackle Satsuma ground - yellow, green, blues, reds. Signed on the side with three character signature. Measures 5 1/4" tall and is 3 1/2" diameter at the widest. Small early repair to the lip - otherwise excellent condition. I date this one to late Edo to early Meiji. One of the best in our collection.

Beautiful and simple Edo period Satsuma sake pouring cup with wooden lid. Decorated in the sparse mid-Edo period style that marks early Satsuma before the more highly decorated style was adopted to appeal to the Western market. Very fine crackle glaze with five kiku mons (the 16 petal imperial chrysthemum) as the only decoration - five in underglaze brown and two in the rare gosu blue. Not signed - as most Edo Satsuma pieces were not signed by the artist. The wooden top appears to be the origin... Click for details
