DESCRIPTION: A handsome Japanese smoking pipe (kiseru) fashioned from a bulbous tube of “Buddha belly” bamboo with mixed metal fittings for the bowl and mouthpiece. Meiji period (1886 – 1912), and in very good condition. DIMENSIONS: 8 ¼” long (21 cm).

There is a pair of foxes in this Ema. Ema is a votive plaque to the shrine. Fox is a messenger of Inari. Inari is the Japanese deity of fertility, agriculture, industry and worldly success. The date, Meiji 43 year (1910), is written on the back side. The picture has stains as shown by the photographs, but Ema itself is in good condition. Measurements: 12 3/8" x 15 3/4" (31.5cm x 39.8cm).

Shishimai ( Lion Dance ) is performed around the New Year or at the festival occasions, wearing a Shishi head and a broad cloth. The wooden Shishi head is made to open its mouth wide. The broad cloth is made with handwoven indigo cotton decorated with washi-paper frill, and the white "hair" of the lion is hemp fiber. A very beautiful Japanese fruitwood box produced in the early Taisho period, pre 1920. The scenes are shallow carved from the outside and inside of the lid. This artistic masterpiece shows the detail and thought invested by the artist, as he has taken full advantage of the imperfection in the wood and has cleverly placed additional scenes of trees and buildings along the shallow fissure. Large, unique, and rare Jizai Kagi(wooden hook). Hooks of this size have traditionally been called “Ebisu”(respectfully named after the God of Good Fortune; believed to bring prosperity and fortune to the home of its owner). This piece features a beautiful deep brown patina to its fine-grain Keyaki wood(Zelkova). Keyaki wood is one of the hardest timbers available in Japan. Very good condition(some natural cracks).
