On the outside various striped and other designs (kasuri and kata-zome) in indigo blue. On the inside patches of mainly solid indigo blue. Height 25 ½; width 17 inches (62 x 42,5 cm). Well pulley. Wooden wheel with forged iron hanging construction. The inside of groove in the wheel, where the rope would run through, lined with a thin layer of copper. Diameter wheel 12 ¼ inches, height of whole 16 ¾ inches, thickness wheel 3, thickness whole 6 ½ inches. A mingei folk art carved wood figure of a court attendant or an acolyte - he stands holding a cup or shallow bowl in both hands in front of him. Age: about 150 years, Height 6 1/2" by 2 3/4" wide " by 1 5*" deep. Condition is generally very good. The left eyelid is missing for some time - traces of old red gesso or paint- other preservation states are very good. Late Edo period.

This late 19th century signed bamboo wrist rest has been finely carved in the image of Daruma. It is a wonderful depiction of the monk who brought Zen Buddhism to Japan with special attention to detail as seen in his stern expression and piercing eyes. Excellent condition. Dimensions: 8” x 2 ½”
