Set for carrying lunch. Bamboo basket lined with green brocade, the outside with a intricate diamond design woven in two colors of bamboo strips, the corners fortified with leather. Dangling from one of the brass handles is a natural gourd with silver stopper and a lacquer sake cup. Basket: H 3; L 6; D 4 ¼ inches (7,5 x 15,2 x 10,6 cm). Gourd: L 7 ½ inches (18,5 cm). Bag used for carrying a picnic set. Pieces of cotton patched together into a square shape with two triangular overlap tips for closure and a strap. On the outside various striped and other designs (kasuri and kata-zome) in indigo blue. On the inside patches of mainly solid indigo blue. Height 25 ½; width 17 inches (62 x 42,5 cm). Japan, Meiji period (around 1900). Some traces of usage, but still good condition.

Inside there are two long boxes, one cubic box and two boxes of half the height, with cover and one top cover. Well pulley. Wooden wheel with forged iron hanging construction. The inside of groove in the wheel, where the rope would run through, lined with a thin layer of copper. Diameter wheel 12 ¼ inches, height of whole 16 ¾ inches, thickness wheel 3, thickness whole 6 ½ inches. Beautiful patina of the keyaki wood, some dents and scratches due to usage, copper on wheel slightly damage due to usage, otherwise very good condition. Japan, 19th century

Circular bent-wood lunchbox, consisting of one tray and three layers of four fan-shaped covered boxes for food. The center of the box is left free, and can hold a flask of sake. This late 19th century signed bamboo wrist rest has been finely carved in the image of Daruma. It is a wonderful depiction of the monk who brought Zen Buddhism to Japan with special attention to detail as seen in his stern expression and piercing eyes. Excellent condition.
