This late 19th century signed bamboo wrist rest has been finely carved in the image of Daruma. It is a wonderful depiction of the monk who brought Zen Buddhism to Japan with special attention to detail as seen in his stern expression and piercing eyes. Excellent condition.

Japanese 19th century height 23 cm.
Dried and polished calabash gourd sake container.The opening fitted with a metal rim. A stopper of carved wood with silk thread for a tight fit. A cord tied around the neck of the gourd has a carved wooden toggle to be looped over an obi or sash. The great charm of this is that the toggle is in the form of a wisteria seed pod. This heavy, carved solid wood sculpture is a mold around which papier-mache was pressed to form a large toy figure of Daruma and dates to the mid-late 19th century. The surface of the wood is slightly rough reflecting layers of rice glue over many years, and there are numerous knife cut lines on the back and front where the dried papier-mache was cut off the mold.
