Japanese DAIKOKU-sama,a Japanese God of Wealth with his magic hammer that makes all wishes possible; standing on two rice bags. KUTANI impressed circular kiln mark on base,(see enlargement #5) all covered in a white glaze. Condition is good, except for 2.5" kiln crack (on the left rice bag (see enlargement# 4 ) Height is 14.25 inches in height. Circa 1870-1890.

This is a set of 3 Japanese temple bells each with an open mouthed active dragon dramatically set against a black ground. Thick lacquer work stands in relief. The metal is most likely brass, painted black inside. Each sounds a fine reverberating note. I'd say Meiji, maybe for export.

Rare, unusual large (16" in height x 15 inch diameter)Japanese WOOD and LACQUER DHARUMA HEAD BUDDHIST SCULPTURE. This was made as a MOLD for making large paper mache Dharuma heads. These paper mache heads were then painted red, white and black. One of the white eyes would be filled in with black by the owner of the new paper mache head, and a wish was made. Two Japanese Shinto Gods, Ebisu with this fish under his left arm, he represents the daily food and Daikoku, happy God of wealth hr holds his magic hammer which, when struck, will produce anything wished for. He is standing on rice bags and together with Ebisu they symbolize food (rice and fish) and therefore wealth. This beautifully grained persimmon tobacco box from the early 1900’s has all the special compartments needed to contain smoking utensils. The side which holds the pipe has been carved in the form of Mt. Fuji. There is an impressed signature on the underside of the cover. Signs of use and patina show this was a cherished piece to someone. Very good condition except for the bamboo tube that held the smoked tobacco ash which is missing. Dimensions: 7 ½” x 3 ¾” x 3”

Simple but very expressive sculpture of a perched hawk, the eyes turned upwards, cut out of the bamboo root. Brown stained bamboo, black lacquer on base and partly on the back. In the base the number or the year 1810 has been engraved. The pattern of the bamboo very cleverly integated into the pattern of the feathers. Good example of mingei, folk art. Small sculpture of a bald headed man sitting in the manner of a rakan, his long garment hanging open at the chest. His face grim, the hands tucked away in the sleeves of his garment. Inscription in black ink on the bottom, giving the date of Bunsei 6 (1823) and indicating the maker as ‘made by the old man Kenko himself’.
