Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques

$295.00

This is an excellent Mingei rendition of the Daruma carved from a piece of natural burl wood. The head is masterfully carved and finished while the rest of the wood is left in its natural state. From the looks of the slightly charred surface on parts of the face, it would appear possible that it was exposed to fire at some point or it might be weathering of a light lacquer glaze to the face. The piece measures 4 7/8” high by 1 ¾” wide and 1 ½” deep. The patina on the face and the uncarved body ... Click for details

This old Japanese hook would have been suspended over the hearth and used to hang cooking pots over the fire. Obviously carved by the original owner/user, this pothook or jizai kagi is heavily grooved from many years of use. The attached rope is probably a replacement to the original rope. It has been knotted into place for some years and I decided not to attempt to remove it.

Beautiful antique Japanese Taiko drum. This item dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900), and is in exceptional condition for its considerable vintage. This type of taiko is known as Byou-uchi Daiko. Typical of this style, the body is carved from a solid round of keyaki wood and the heads are nailed to the drum with large hob-nails. Because the heads are fixed, this type of taiko is not tunable. The heads are intact and retain much of their original tautness, though this drum is probably not... Click for details
