Beautiful antique Japanese knarled root made of cherry wood. Used in the tea ceremony for bamboo basket or vase ikebana display. Late Meiji Period c.1895 with rich patina and fabulous asymetrical flow. Excellent condition with very tiny minor original wood splits on surface but these nicely add rather than detract. c.1895. Beautiful and dramatic Japanese antique isho tansu (clothing chest), from the Sendai area of Japan, made with kiri (paulownia) wood front and sugi wood frame, original deep red / orange translucent lacquer finish with wonderful patina especially around the hardware, front of frame is lacquered black, heavy iron hardware with chrysanthemum shaped lock plates with flurishes of leaves, moko shaped iron handles, Edo Period (early 19th century).
Size: 34 1/2" high x 46 3/4" wide x 17" deep.

Rare Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) made all of hinoki wood, rare because of its unusually tall configuration, from the Mikuni Area, upper sliding panels cover a compartment with one shelf, lower sliding panels have horizontal slats and cover 4 interior drawers, heavy iron hardware with square shaped handles, 2 long drawers on top, 3 smaller drawers along bottom, 19th century.
Size: 41 1/4" high x 35 1/2" wide (36 3/4" wide including side handles) x 15 1/4".
