Meiji-Period (c. 1900) Japanese merchant tansu chest, or choba-dansu. Finely crafted from hinoki and sugi, subspecies of cypress indigenous to Japan; thoroughly cleaned and waxed to restore the lustrous patina. The cast iron handles and locks are in good condition; the locking mechanism of the hinged door slides freely, allowing it to be used without inadvertently locking the door closed. Approximately 35 inches tall, 34 1/2" wide, and 17" deep.

Antique Japanese sectional kitchen tansu chest, or mizuya dansu. Meiji-Period (c.1890), 65 inches tall, 47" wide and 16" deep (bottom section, 29 1/2" tall; top section, 35 1/2"). Beautifully restored antique Japanese tansu glass display cabinet. This chest dates to the mid Meiji-Period (c.1880) and has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed with a warm reddish brown beeswax to restore the original luster to the wood. This small Japanese tansu is approximately from the ealry to mid 1900s. The tansu is in a small size but it has a varity of storage spaces inside as you can see on the photos. It wil make a perfect end talbe or night stand. The tansu is made from kiri (paulownia wood).
