Meiji-Period (c. 1900) Japanese merchant tansu chest, or choba-dansu. Finely crafted from hinoki and sugi, subspecies of cypress indigenous to Japan; thoroughly cleaned and waxed to restore the lustrous patina. The cast iron handles and locks are in good condition; the locking mechanism of the hinged door slides freely, allowing it to be used without inadvertently locking the door closed. This chest dates to the mid Meiji-Period (c.1880) and has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed with a warm reddish brown beeswax to restore the original luster to the wood.
