DESCRIPTION: A beautifully carved ivory whist counter featuring two humorous monkeys, one on the right looking in alarm as the peaches he is holding are being stolen by a mouse with inlaid eyes. The monkey on the left grabs the mouse’s tail while he himself reaches for the peaches. Etched on each of the five larger tabs are furry monkeys in various positions with comical facial expressions. Japanese ivory high-detailed shodana. This piece is an extremely great example of Meiji works of art. It was either made as a gift to the Imperial Palace, or was made to be in one of the world exhibitions. All the different techniques of carving ivory is apparent in the shodana including high and low relief pierced carving. The whole piece is finished with mixed-metalwork fittings with Mother-of-pearl inlays. Signed Shuno Shue, 19th century. Height 20.5"

DESCRIPTION: An appealing and well carved Japanese okimono of six monkeys standing with splayed legs and holding high above them two additional reclining monkeys. One of the reclined monkeys is eating fruit while looking warily at the other, who feigns devotion in order to get a bite for himself. The detail on this carving is quite good as evidenced by the finely delineated fur, and the tiny ears and hands that are perfectly carved. The base is signed and decorated with a double leaf mark. Late 19th century rosewood game counter with 8 ivory tabs carved with monkeys in different attitudes. Excellent quality carving - see hairwork and faces. Comes with original kiriwood box (loss of 2 planks on the bottom of the cover), extensively inscribed on the cover and one side.
