A finely carved elephant ivory figure of a Japanese mythological mystic, a sennin, which is derived from Taoisim. In Taoisim, the mystical alliance can be attained by retreating from civilization, living simply and communicating with nature. Mountain mystics from Chinese Taoisim became sennin in Japan, and were believed to inhabit the mountains. Half-squatting, the skeleton leaned to the skull by his or her right hand when protecting it with the left hand. With fantastic skill, the piece was carved in open work from one solid ivory block.
