Each side of this most unusual brass match safe is decorated with relief figures running in a rainy landscape scene inside a cartouche surrounded by a scaly repousse dragon. Meiji period; late 19th/early 20th century. The two figures are hunched forward, running into the driving rain, one with an umbrella and the other holding a straw bundle. An elegant incense burner (koro) of dark-patinated bronze w. three long legs and a pair of raised ears on the shoulders of the flattened, ovoid body. The lid in openwork. Decorated on upper body and lid w. various scholar’s seals, the two largest in low relief, the rest w. inlaid lines in copper thread. Meiji, before 1900. H. 13 cm, D. 10 cm. Condition: Very fine w. minor wear due to age.

This is a kasuga hanging lantern. Kasuga lantern is Kasuga Shrine style lantern which is located in Nara city. These lanterns are hung in front of the shrine corridors and pavilions. These Japanese bronze "kugikakushi" (ornamental metal covering to hide nails) were relief cast in the form of stylized dragons coiled to form the shape of stylized clouds. Meiji/Taisho period, early 20th century. The dragons were cast in high relief against a punched ground with tiny circles. Both kugikakushi have backplates and push-pin type shafts.
