Good size 18th century ivory netsuke of Chokwaro sennin standing on one foot wearing tattered robe and leaf cape and skirt, and holding a large double gourd out of which a horse emerges. According to a Japanese legend Chokwaro sennin (Chinese sage) could summon the magic horse out of his gourd to be transported wherever he wanted. Very powerful early piece with great smiling face and beautiful flow of his robe. Pleasantly chunky (good fat piece, not a flat type), deep himotoshi typical for the p... Click for details

Somewhat unusual 19th century boxwood netsuke of a scowling dog that appears to be scared, judging by the tail between its legs. Unusual attitude as a subject for netsuke, as well as the depiction of the breed - it seems to be of a hound variety, also not often represented in Japanese art. Excellent detailed carving, great sense of volume, perfectly captured attitude, superb staining, wonderful wear and patina consistent with age. Eyes inlaid with light horn. Height 1 5/8 inches.
