Early 19th century small Japanese ivory seal netsuke of shishi - Buddhist lion - sitting on a low table, and with a base carved with seal script characters. Excellent crisp carving with great face and wonderful depiction of its muscular legs, curly mane and bushy tail. Eyes inlaid with black horn, himotoshi formed by natural opening in the piece, traces of red seal paste in the grooves. Delicate netsuke in great condition. Height 1 3/16 inches.

18th century ivory netsuke of a sennin (Chinese sage) wearing a tattered robe and a leaf cape, holding a long scarf in his hands with a double gourd tied to it and resting on his shoulders. Late 18th to early 19th century ivory netsuke carved as a crouching snarling tiger. Strong early piece with great facial expression and wonderful fur texture worn on protruding parts. Cord hole is formed by natural opening between the foot and the body of the animal. Wonderful rhythm to the flow of the tail, excellent sense of volume to the animal with its large paws and angular shoulder blades. Eyes inlaid with mother of pearl, superb wear and patina, wonderful sculpture. Height 1 inch.

19th century marine ivory (walrus tusk) netsuke of a man standing on high clogs with a short club tucked beneath his sash, and playing a flute. Most probably netsuke represents an actor in a role of Yasumasa - the retainer of the warrior Raiko, and a famous flute player. His brother was attempting to kill Yasumasa, but the beauty of the music stopped the murderer. DESCRIPTION: A skillfully carved and quite charming ivory netsuke of a furry seated bear with legs crossed and tongue outstretched licking his right paw. The detail on this carving is quite outstanding as even the bear’s canine teeth can be seen on either side of the small extended tongue, and the bear’s fur is carefully and naturally depicted.
