Late 18th to early 19 century ivory netsuke of sannin jogo - the three drunkards showing the varying effects of sake: laughter, weeping and anger. Uncommon topic, great faces, ivory of typical 18th century triangular section, several old smoothed chips along the bottom edge. Serious netsuke with pleasant feel of age, beautiful wear and patina. 19th century ivory netsuke of a reclining karako (Chinese boy) holding a fan in his hand. Wonderful carving, well captured dreamy facial expression, wear and patina consistent with age,. Beautifully etched textile patterns, the sun and the moon of the fan are inlaid with mother of pearl. Signed MUNEYUKI on the inlaid cinnabar plaque on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 500, number 1729). Length 1 1/2 inches.

19th century ivory netsuke of a samurai with a drawn sword, and a female demon standing behind him. Most probably netsuke illustrates the legend of Omori Hikoshichi - a known warrior - who was asked by a beautiful woman to carry her across the stream. While doing so, Omori looked at her reflection in the water, and saw her true features - that of a demon, so he drew his sword to kill her. Unusual late 19th to ealy 20th century wooden netsuke of two swimming carp. According to a Chinese myth a carp that can swim up the waterfall turns into a dragon, and thus serves as a paragon of perseverance, especially in scholarly pursuits.
