Three piece antique Japanese early Meiji Period c.1885 bronze flower vase used for the tea ceremony and ikebana flower arrangements. The bottom stand is on three gourd legs with raised swirling waves. The body has raised geese flying amongst
pines. Geese with pines connotates 'kanraigetsu' the eigth lunar month in the old calendar - the month of the geese's return. Folk beliefs associate

Antique Japanese utsubatai in the original box signed "Sendai-Maki" which is the style of bronze flower vase with raised circling. Very unusual. Also written on the box is 'murasaki-do' which is a type of colored bronze created with the 'yutenki' technique of dipping the bronze in hot oil. Meiji Period shrine roof gable has the "noshi" motif carved. Symbolizing abundance and celebration, this shrine gable comes from a shrine in a domain south of Kyoto. Tenjin was a loyal minister of the Emperor who was betrayed by jealous rivals. Tenjin was banished to an island where he endured his injustice. After he died, calamities befell the capital of Kyoto and people started to realize they were being caused by the unhappy and wronged spirit of the loyal minister.
