This antique Japanese shinto shrine plaque is from the late Meiji Period c.1890. The characters read 'Inari Jingya' (Inari Shrine). Many shinto shrines have a separate structure where Inari Daimyojin, the deity of abundant rice harvests and wealth in all forms, is worshipped. The guardians of such a sanctuary are two foxes, one carrying a jewel or scroll giving power, the other a key to a chest of treasures. c.1890. (25" x 18") (64cm x 46cm). Revered Tenjin is the symbol of virtue, loyalty and saint of scholars in Japan. Sugawara Michizane was a famous Japanese scholar and minister in the 8-9th century. The new emperor was jealous and exiled him. All kinds of disasters struck the new emperor's family and Kyoto. From the south of Kyoto in an area known as Fushimi, there is a huge shrine called, 'Inari Shrine'. In Edo (1614-1867) and Meiji (1867-1912) the area around the shrine specialized in making clay dolls fired in Kyoto kilns as souviners for the visitors to Kyoto. They served as protective talismans and household deities. The buddhist jewel or 'hoju' which appears as a tapering ringed pearl, symbolizes the compassion of the Buddha for all sentient beings. It is a buddhist symbol of purity and the void. Mythical dragons adorn this antique Japanese bronze Taisho Period (1912 - 1926) buddhist temple incense burner with fantastic elephant head handles. Written on the top are the Japanese characters `Tenshotennen` (Edo Period)
and `Yojiro Saku` (made by Yojiro). This antique Japanese iron lantern has four parts; the base on tripod legs, the main cylindar body with squares motif (the latch is missing) the roof and the conical top.
