Japanese earthenware WHISTLE (that works) from SETO in the form of a deity with bulging eyes, long beard and pot belly partially covered with a fan. This was apparently in use in the early 19th C. as an alarm while out walking at night or perhaps just for children to enjoy in the daytime! There are some losses at the back on the right side which are shown in the pictures. Well modeled, functional and unique! Dimensions are 2 3/8 of an inch (6 cms) x 1 5/8 " or 4.2 cms. 1800 - 1868, Edo.

Inscripted on the rim of this antique Japanese Zen Buddhist bronze bell is the name of the temple, Kaishoji, a zen buddhist temple in Azuchi, where Oda Nobunaga created one of Japan's foremost castle towns. Also the date of the bell is Meiji 38 October (1906). The names of the donors, all women, are also inscripted on the rim. The sound is reverberating and unending. Huge Japanese cypress wood carved into the face of 'Omote' one of the beloved figures of the Noh pantheon. Age wear and some cracks and worn blotches in the gofun oyster shell paint.
