Early antique Japanese Meiji Period c.1870 buddhist 'zushi' altar used to house a buddhist deity. The lacquered wood alter has bronze fittings on the doors and a tapered roof with levered corners. The doors swing open in two panel and four panel segments to reveal a gold lacquered inside chamber. Exceptional condition for its age. Some wear and peeling on the base in the back. c.1870. Antique Japanese 'Do-Chu' hand forged bronze alloy carp vase. Do-Chu (metal craft) had its roots in Edo Period (17th and 18th century). Patronized by the Lord of Hiroshima Province, Lord Asano, he assembled the greatest metal craftsman of the age to produce this hammered metal-ware. Wonderful antique Japanese Meiji Period Buddhist temple bronze water vessel. Thick, richly patinaed bronze. The lid has a well defined turtle on top while the middle basin has geometrical designs and a dragon spout. Signed Meiji 22 this 'suiban' is produced by using old ship wood and then creating a honeycomb effect. The outside of the original box has the characters 'funamushi hirokuchi soguro kaki' meaning 'black lacquered flower vessel'. The inside of the lid has the date, Meiji 22, the artist's name, Morikoan and that it is made for a Mr. Morikawa. (1889). (16" x 12") (41cm x 30cm).
