Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. Edo Period c.1850 antique Japanese zen temple bell from Kyushu in the south of Japan. Written on the bell is the temple name, Hijikan-In, a buddhist temple in Chikugo, Yanagawa-Han, Kawaharauchi village, Kyushu. Yanagawa Han was an Edo Period samurai fief but is now called Fukuoaka in modern Japan. Thick Edo bronze and fabulous reverberating sound. c.1850. (15" x 12") (38cm x 30cm). This sensational early antique Meiji Period (c.1880) 'Hangi" carved woodblock Japanese character hibachi has a copper lining and the rims and wood are thick, worn 'keyaki' Japanese elm wood with a fantastic patina from much use. The Japanese characters carved into the wood are the two alphabets used by the Japanese, 'hiragana' and 'katagana'. Would make a beautiful planter or storage vessel. c.1880. One of nicest examples of the Japanese woodcarvers art is seen in this small carving (okimono) of two quail sitting on a branch of a mulberry bush. The carving only measures 1 1/2" high x 2 1/8" wide x 1" deep - yet it has incredible detail to the carving. The feather of the two birds, the tiny berries and the inset black eyes of the quail are executed in wonderful carving. This antique Japanese 'kyo-yaki' ceramic from Kyoto in late Meiji (1867-1912) is an Edo Period sumo referee (shimpan). He is holding a 'gunbai' or ceremonial fan behind his back used in the pre-match ceremony and after the match to indicated the winner. Also he is holding an ancient Heian Period gunbai in the front. His costume is one the sumo referees used in the Edo Period. The fan in back is missing one rib but this is also questionable; it could be that is the way the piece was fired. (11½" ...
