A scholar in a reed chair stairs out over his solitary landscape alive with bamboo and twisting branches, a scene typical of the radical style of Shirakura Niho (also Jiho) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Titled "Nagara Harusame" (spring rain in Nagara district) Jalpanese figures and landscape scroll painting is painted with ink and color on silk. Measurements about : 43" x 12" (109cm x 30.5cm), Painted area : 9 7/8" x 8 1/4" (25cm x 21cm). Signed artist name "Koseki" and sealed. Nakanishi Koseki (1807-1884), scholar artist, active in Kyoto from late Edo to early Meiji era. It is in good condition. A little bit of marks are present.

A set of six sliding doors from a Japanese alcove or tokonoma painted in the spring of Meiji 38, 1904. The vivid green of the bamboo contrasts strikingly against the gold ground whilst the sparrows in flight provide a constant source of youthful movement.
