A red and white tile-roofed pavilion rises in an Autumn shaded pass, riotous crags rising up the length of the scroll by Domoto Insho enclosed in the original signed wooden box which is enclosed in a lacquered wooden cover box (nijubako). A scholar in a reed chair stairs out over his solitary landscape alive with bamboo and twisting branches, a scene typical of the radical style of Shirakura Niho (also Jiho) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The scholar figure is quite distinct, all else slightly blurred as if viewed in a dream, drawing our attention to the lone figure. Titled "Nagara Harusame" (spring rain in Nagara district) Jalpanese figures and landscape scroll painting is painted with ink and color on silk. Measurements about : 43" x 12" (109cm x 30.5cm), Painted area : 9 7/8" x 8 1/4" (25cm x 21cm). Signed artist name "Koseki" and sealed. Nakanishi Koseki (1807-1884), scholar artist, active in Kyoto from late Edo to early Meiji era. It is in good condition. A little bit of marks are present.

A rare series of twelve paintings from the 18th century depicting stations along the famed Tokaido or Eastern Ocean Road of Japan. The detailed illustrations begin with Tokyo at the far right and end with the lower reaches of Lake Biwa and finally Kyoto. A distinct emphasis has been placed on representing the existing castles of the time and this may well allow further research to more accurately date the work. The work bears two seals although they remain unread.

A set of six sliding doors from a Japanese alcove or tokonoma painted in the spring of Meiji 38, 1904.
The vivid green of the bamboo contrasts strikingly against the gold ground whilst the sparrows in flight provide a constant source of youthful movement.
Hand beaten gold leaf has been applied directly over silk, lending the fusuma a brilliant reflective quality. The image has been painted with pigment and gofun.
