A rare series of twelve paintings from the 18th century depicting stations along the famed Tokaido or Eastern Ocean Road of Japan. The detailed illustrations begin with Tokyo at the far right and end with the lower reaches of Lake Biwa and finally Kyoto. A distinct emphasis has been placed on representing the existing castles of the time and this may well allow further research to more accurately date the work. The work bears two seals although they remain unread.

Blossoms dot the gnarled limbs of an aged plum shading chrysanthemum and peony growing along the edges of a cobalt pond on this half-size 6 panel restored screen dating from the later Edo. Above clouds of applied gold obscure the distance, while below verdant hillocks rise from the golden mist. This rare impressive scroll painting is painted with ink and color on silk by very fine brushwork. Measurements of Scroll : 58 3/8" x 36" (148cm x 91.2cm), Picture area : 30 1/2" x 20 7/8" (77.4cm x 53cm). The painting is in good condition. A little bit of marks are present, and there is the repair with silk on the lower right-hand as shown by the photographs.
