A KYOYAKI KENDI SIGNED KANZAN.

First-rate decoration of a dragon above rocks and waves, a key-fret border includes several pearls of wisdom. The mouth rim is unglazed suggesting that it perhaps once had a lid. Signed Kanzan on the base.

Japanese stoneware VoC guglet / bottle vase

A Japanese bottle / guglet made from greyish porcelainous stoneware covered in a crackled glaze. There is a VoC emblem painted within a wreath on the front and to the base. It has a knife paired footrim and iron blemishes to the glaze.

I am unable to date this piece and have not seen anything else like it. The Dutch East India Company (VoC) folded in about !800. Whether this is contemporary or not, I am unsure.... Click for details

This richly crackled glazed folk pottery stoneware oil plate (“abura-zara” or “andon-zara”) is sparsely decorated with sailboats in a landscape scene on a buff-colored clay ground. Late Edo period, early 19th century. The design was freely drawn and boldly executed in underglaze iron-oxide brown and ochre pigments using just a few simple brush strokes. A handsome Bizen tokkuri (sake bottle) glazed with the typical greenish/brown ash glaze over an unglazed natural reddish clay. The tokkuri measures 10 1/4" high by 3/3/4" diameter at the waist. There is a potters mark on the base however it is too partial for us to translate the mark. It is in excellent condition - we date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1900-1915.

Japanese Seiji (celadon) Kogo or incense case is in the shape of fish. Measurements about : 3 3/4" (9.5cm) long, 1 3/4" (4.5cm) wide and 1 8/1" (2.8cm) high. It is in good condition and comes from old wooden box. There is an age-old Kintsugi (gold patch) on the taill-fin.

A slightly compressed vase in Shikaragi-ware of cylindrical shape w. a stylized incised bamboo-leaf shape on the front. The upper part w. a light, green-coloured glaze attractively “running in tears.” On the back-side a loop for hanging on the wall. Signed w. 2 parallell lines in the bottom. Late Edo to early Meiji.
