Gourd shaped ewer or water dropper. Cream colored stoneware with finely crackled clear glaze, on which a decoration of blossoms and lucky symbols along a meandering stream between mountains in red, green, blue, yellow, aubergine enamels and gold. Kyo yaki, or Kyoto Satsuma. Japan, 19th century. The stopper is missing.

The size of Plate: 5 5/8" Dia x 3/4" High. Beautiful Japanese Old Bizen Plate. It is made wonderfully detail relief work of Botan (peony) design. The wokmenship is superb with relief work of peony as well as the mesh work background. The condition of plate is excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. A couple of Hittsuki at the backside edge from kiln. Dating from Edo Kouki(late Edo). 1800-1850.

A very rare Edo period Oribe pottery lidded dish covered outside with black lacquer with maki-e designs of various patterns (likening to Tsugaru-nuri lacquer-ware) surmounted by three worn gold dial. The circular images are of popular literati themes, a hut in trees, steep mountain vision and geese in flight. Ogata Kenzan (1663 Kyoto – 1743 Edo), was a genius ceramic artist and designer who took the world of Japanese pottery to a new level and branded a style of ceramic that is still in the making today. A sizable Bizen double gourd vase signature is with two applied handles and numerous yellow spots of the natural ash glaze used when firing Bizen. The base carries the signature of TOZAN. It measures 10” high and is 5” diameter at the largest part of the lower waist. We estimate it dates to the late 19th to early 20th century, Condition is excellent. Bizen pottery, along with the pottery of the Seto, Tokoname, Tanba, Echizen and Shigaraki regions is one of the six potteries of the Middle Ages.... Click for details
