Japanese early 20th Century set of small dishes by MAKUZU KOZAN. Each dish is in the shape of 2 overlapping clam shells. Each one is designed with a cloud design done in overglaze enamel on the left hand shell and with one of the famous historic Japanese poets on the right hand shell done in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels and gold. An unusual glazed pottery figural of a seated monkey in the pose of a priest holding a flame like item in its hands. The face of the monkey is unglazed brown clay - the body and robes are executed in an off white crackle glaze with dark grey spots as accents on the front. The monkey's hair is glazed in an overglaze orange/brown enamel. At the lower part of the back there is an old museum or collectors notation in black paint that says:

An antique flask much like a tokkuri used for transporting sake, the "abura" (oil) "dokkuri" (flask) was used to transport oil products. H.27cm (10.5"), Body Dia.16cm (6.25".) This one is from the old Echigo (present-day Niigata Prefecture) which had stores of oil used for heating and lighting that were shipped up the Japan Sea coast north to Hokkaido.
