Set of five 19th century Japanese Ko Kutani (Old Kutani) style ceramic plates in the revival style likely from the Yoshidaya kilns. Each plate is freely decorated in rich overglaze enamel colors of yellow, blue, green, red and aubergine depicting a characteristic Chinese figure in a landscape. Each plate has a “pie crust” raised edge with a diaper design within its border, the flat rim outlined in a reddish brown glaze (“beni ye”). This accentuates the thickness of the biscuit as well as furnish... Click for details

Crackled blue-green dotted with oil-spots in brown and blue cover this very unusual early 20th century studio vase in the shape of a crane, the elegant birds head fully 3 dimensional looking back over its shoulder. I have never seen a piece like this before. It is likely, judging by earth and glaze, from the area of central Kyushu, Agano or Onta. It is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, and in excellent condition.

A fine example of the misshapen forms which exemplify the Japanese aesthetic of musakui no sakui, the intention of no intention. This crushed and squeezed Tamba vase is covered in dark iron, speckled with licks of flame yellow. It is 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in a kiri-wood box.

A small tokkuri has melted into the side of this large antique Chossen Karatsu Vase , a kiln miss-fire. Raw dark earth supplanted by rivulets of dark ame-yu glaze frosted above with crackled green tinged white. A very unusual piece, as ordinarily mistakes were destroyed. Was it done purposely or testament to the violence within the kiln, where 40 percent loss is standard? An example of rare chance or musakui no sakui, the aesthetic of intention of no intent; we will never know, however it cl... Click for details

This boldly modeled Japanese Bizen ware okimono depicts a stylized tiger and dates to the late Edo period, ca.1800-1850. The signature of the artist “Shotan” is stamped on the base of the tiger’s tail. The animal is seated on its hindquarters, looking to the left with a fierce expression. The skill of the potter is clearly shown on the wonderfully modeled head with its prominent tongue and teeth, wide open mouth and the hollow eyes. Fur markings and stripes are incised over the entire body, whi... Click for details

A slab molded Oribe dish dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period. The top of the dish has been glazed with a tan glaze and then had a muslin cloth imprinted on it. The characteristic dark green Oribe glaze was then applied to the sides and dripped down towards the base of the dish. On the bottom, the dish is unglazed and has an unusual feature of parallel stripes that were made either with the potter’s fingers or a spatula type tool. There is a potter’s mark in an ovoid cartouche – howeve... Click for details
