14" x 4.5" Very Good condition, with one hairline crack about 1" in length with a slight loss of glaze on outside rim. Also a circular crack inside bottom of bowl. Beautiful soft yellow glaze with 7 typical marks inside of bowl from organic material used as "saggars," during the firing process in kiln. This piece probably comes from the Seto area kilns. It's common everyday functional art, very Shibui, called, "Ishi-zara," or stone bowl by the
Japanese. This item as all my items were obtained d... Click for details

Classic Tamba ware tokkuri (sake bottle), the rich brown ceramic body decorated with an almost black glaze at the neck which drips down the length of the bottle on all sides. Late 19th/early 20th century. On one side there is a section of naturally-occurring ash glaze. There are also two spots on the body where the black overglaze appears to have been touched, leaving smudges shaped like thumb prints. Tamba, a remote and mountainous area lying to the northeast of Kyoto and Osaka, has been the c... Click for details

Very nice and rather unusual pottery of the Bodhisattva Kannon in a seated contemplative pose. A series of raised Kanji characters impress molded onto the back of the piece. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide a translation. The piece is glazed in a rich mustard gold color that adds richness to the figure. Dates from the late Meiji period, circa 1910s. Height:10cm(4.0inch),150g. Some age crackling but overall excellent condition.

A rough and ready large flared pottery waste bowl used in the tea ceremony to discard the left over water and tea dregs. This fine old folk bowl has the simple decoration of two large floral sprays on the interior and a series of smaller floral designs around the outer side. A plain geometric pattern decorates the rim. There are some nicks to the rim as this old bowl has seen some heavy usage over the years - and some minor staining to the interior sides. The bowl measures 12" diameter at the to... One of the more amusing and unusual examples of either Banko or Hizen pottery we have run into lately. This delightful diamond shaped dish/tray has a greyish-tan ground and is decorated in cavetto with a funny looking dragon in trailing slip decoration that forms a thick, almost rope-like moriage type design. The dragon in done in a highly stylized manner with the face consisting of just the beard nose and two eyes - followed by the suggestion of his body. The dragon is in pursuit of the Tamba o... Richly glazed studio pottery bottle vase in tear drop form with “Wakazan” seal mark on a brown base, ca.1900. A thick olive green and brown glaze covers the heavily potted stoneware body. Shades of blue and gold flambe are randomly scattered over the body, with a gold glaze drip around the neck beneath the lip. The interior of the mouth radiates with lustrous and brilliant shades of blue and gold glaze in flambe drips. Functional folk-craft products or “mingei” are endowed with a beauty directly...
