An antique Japanese brown pottery figure of a wild boar hand sculpted with nice detail on the bristly hairs on his back and the fierce expression. Glazed highlights in cream and black. I believe this one dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1890. I am reasonably sure this is is Bizen pottery from the look of the clay, but not 100 per cent sure. At any rate, it is a great example of the Japanese potters ability to capture animal figurals in dynamic poses. Condition is excel... Click for details

This unusual candle-shaped sake bottle or “rosoku-tokkuri,” which is covered with a deep dark brown glaze, is an example of Tachikui/Tamba ware. Meiji/Taisho period. Unglazed calligraphic symbols, drawn with a wax resist, surround the square-shouldered body of the bottle. The village of Tachikui, located in an isolated mountain region of northern Hyogo Prefecture, is the last pottery village in Tamba. The dominant color of the Tachikui wares is a rich deep brown. This portable crescent-shaped ceramic sake container, called a “dachibin,” is one of the classic shapes of Tsuboyan pottery (tsuboya-yaki) and unique to Okinawa. Early 20th century. The shoulder and spout are glazed in rich iron brown with copper green glaze splashes. This glaze also embellishes the side ends of the flask and the hand-pressed perforated lugs to hold a cord. A bold and freely-drawn figure of a crab decorates the front of the flask, and splashes of red and blue glaze are painted b... Click for details

This high-standing ceramic shop hibachi (“mise-hibachi”) features a ribbed concentric ring design with a deep brown glaze streaked with mottled ochre and blue flambe glazes on all sides. Likely Seto ware, Taisho period. Just below the lip is a subtle Chinese key design, which can be seen at certain angles but did not appear in our photographs. In all our years of collecting, we have only come across a couple of these small table screens for the scholars desk - known as Tsuitate. (The last one was saw was done in Hirado and that was 7-8 years ago). This handsome and strong pottery table screen is done in the Kakiemon palette and depicts polychrome chrysanthemums on a plain tan crackle glazed ground. Lovely in its stark simplicity - undoubtedly made for the Japanese market - and dating from the early to mid 19th century - the Late Edo ... Click for details

This unusually shaped Bizen ware sake flask (“tokkuri”) has an irregular pinched body and a tall neck. Early 20th century, probably Meiji. You can see that it has been wheel thrown. This is a wonderfully tactile piece with a great “feel,” and it fits perfectly into the hand for pouring. A rich natural ash glaze covers the shoulder and some of the protruding angles, culminating in glaze splotches on some surface areas. For centuries, Bizen has been highly regarded for its dark red-brown stonewar... Click for details

This dramatic little Japanese folk pottery sake flask (“tokkuri”) from the Mashiko kilns appears to date from the early 20th century. The body is covered in a rich brown glaze with splashes of overrun white glaze along the sides, which culminates in thick drops along the base of the flask. The low, squat round shape would facilitate the warming of sake. Mashiko has been a major folk pottery center since the 1850’s producing primarily utilitarian table wares. Mashiko pottery became widely known t... Click for details
