Large Japanese Bizen ware sake bottle (“tokkuri”) in pinched form with indentations on three sides which are impressed with low-relief figures of three of the Seven Gods of Good Luck (“Shichi Fukujin”). Natural yellowish ash glaze spots are deposited on the shoulder and figures. The bottle is wheel thrown, and there is an impressed potters mark on the foot. Early 20th century. The three modeled figures are the gods Hotai, Fukurokuju and Benten. For centuries, Bizen has been highly regarded for i... Click for details

39 cm tall, 32 cm diameter. Good condition with a large chip at mouth, common to old tsubo. Dating to the beginning of th Edo Era, early 17c. This marvelous and simple four eared (looped) storage jar would have been used for grain or tea storage. The piece shows a variety of firing effects of the natural ash glazing. Ceramics at Tamba [Hyogo prefecture, Honshu (near Kyoto)] go back to the Kamakura era (1185-1334). Early production in the large number of kilns at Tamba was mostly of large na... Click for details

Pottery Tea Jar - Samurai Wave or Wheel Motif

$295.00

A handsome little tea jar decorated with a traditional Samurai wave pattern design in handpainted slip trailing decoration, under the glaze. Alternatively, the design could be a highly stylized interpretation of the traditional "floating wheel" design that dates back to the 12th century. That motif derives from the early practice of soaking the wheels for bullock carts in the Kamo River in Kyoto; wheels thus treated were stronger and held their shape longer. The design went out of fashion after... Click for details

7.25" x 6" x 1.25". Very good condition with a miniscule fleck repair on branch end on bottom, and some glaze wear on interior from use. Stamped with the characters "Kairakuen sei". Dating to the first half of the 19th century, the late Edo era. Kairakuen was a Daimyo sponsored private kiln (oniwa-yaki), set up on the castle grounds at Kishu, Wakayama prefecture around 1827; the kiln operated only for a brief period until 1844. The kiln imitated the style of Chinese Ming "three color" wares.... Click for details

$250.00

Late Edo to early Meiji period Japanese pottery tokkuri - a small jar for holding and pouring sake. This is a nicely hand potted piece with an underglaze cobalt blue village scene on one side and several Kanji characters on the other side. I cannot tell if the Kanji are a makers signature or a description of some sort. Either way, it is a very nice strong piece from about 1850 - 1890. Interesting shape the way it flares down into an almost conical shape. Measures 5 3/4" high and is 4" diameter a... Click for details

A very rare figural piece of a Kylin from the Bizen Kilns. This delightful figure has a charmingly goofy folksy expression with its dark brown/black applied eyes and its ruffled mane down its back. He stands a full 6 1/2" high and is 7 1/2" long x 4" wide. Unsigned piece - excellent condition - there are two very old chips to the toes - both the right and left foot - otherwise it is fine. Quite rare to find animal figurals in this pottery. I believe it dates from the late Meiji period.
