This early 20th century Ohi koro incense burner is shaped as a shishi or mythical lion. It has the characteristic Ohi rich amber iron glaze and has been finely crafted with wonderful stylized detailing. There is a carved signature on the base and it comes in the original signed box. Very good condition with a minor chip on a lower tooth.

A beautifully executed model of Kannon by Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916), also known as Makuzu Kozan. Here the studio closely followed Bizen stoneware sculpture of the late Edo and Meiji periods. The figure is 13.5 inches or 34.5cm high and is marked Kozan on the back. It has a chipped finger. It is part of the studio's production meant for the domestic Japanese market rather than for export.

Wonderful rare early 19th C. Japanese footed stoneware vessel. Open mouth with poliwog peering over edge with center tadpole and plant decoration. Outside is painted in black with Kenzan style mountain landscape. Charles Freer provenance. The vessel measures 6 1/8" high x 6 7/8" diameter. Signed on bottom in gourd shaped cartouche. 1" rim chip, otherwise fine.

A flaring form decorated with iron florals between latticework pillars on a foot of petal-like frets by Kiyomizu Rokube V enclosed in the original wooden box. A healthy round-faced, plump figured, seated boy wearing a typical high hat of boy doll figures of the period. He is also wearing a checker-patterned loincloth. His hands are positioned under his chin, where he is holding his hat ties together. The stoneware was formed with a mold (you can see the faint molding line on both sides and underneath--it is not a crack.) The surface has a natural patina from age.
