This wonderfully detailed boxwood tray has been realistically carved in the form of a curled lotus leaf holding a lotus flower seed pod. Meiji period (1868-1912). The close-grained hardwood has a rich brown color and a soft dark patina reflecting many years of careful use and care. The front depicts the top of an open lotus leaf with curled outer edges. Charming antique Japanese tea kettle (tetsubin), made of cast iron with scene of mountain village and bridge in relief on either side of the kettle, signature chop on back near handle, handle and lid are made of bronze, underside of lid is signed with 4 characters, Meiji Period (1868-1912).

A keyaki burl surrounds a keyaki slab to form this tea tray. The burl edges curl like breaking waves over the tray bottom. The inside of the tray is black lacquer, which shows wear. The center is crackled and there are chips. The bottom of the tray shows wear as well. The bottom reveals the square nails that were used in assembly. This was made in the Meiji period and used in the sencha tea ceremony to hold either tea or smoking articles. ... Click for details

The size of Chawan: 4 3/4" Dia x 3 1/2" High. Very unusual and nice Japanese Kuro Raku Chawan by Kairaku. The raku chawan(tea bowl) is made inthe shape of rounded shape. It is deeper than normal chawan size. It has one reddish brown Keshiki inside as well as outside. The reddish keshiki are in different spot.
