Here is a really beautifully detailed KUTANI water bucket for tea ceremony. Subtle hand painted details to the Japanese taste with delicate birds, floral and exceptionally painted gilt details on fine white porcelain ground. Dates to late 19th century. The washing bucket is unsigned.

The box in the shape of a formal garden pathway stone. Decorated with falling maple leaves in overglaze enamels. Leaves are on the outside and inside of both sections of this delightful kogo. The design would make this kogo ideal for use in the autumn ceremonies.

Rather unusual early 19th century Japanese lacquer round kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony) decorated both on the top and the bottom with medium relief chrysanthemum flowers and scrolling vines, all on a keyfret ground. Cinnabar lacquer, beautiful accumulation in compressed dust in crevices, great patina. Recessed bottom has Japanese characters FUKU (happiness) and JU (longevity) on it. Tea leaf storage jars used in Japan like this were produced in and out of Japan from about the 15th century onwards. I wish I could say that this is one of the famous Muromachi Era "nanban" wares from the Phillipines or Southern China that are so prized by Japanese tea ware collectors, but it is one of the replica items made up through the Meiji Era in Seto, Japan. This unique and heavy Iron Tetsubin depicts a Japanese folktale called “The Quarrel of Tee Monkey and the Crab”. The story is of a Monkey, in his greed and covetousness, kills his friend the Crab over the fruit of a Persimmon tree.
