From perfectly smooth to the raspy feel of sharkskin. At several places the black glaze blushes to a deep brown. Gold glaze was applied in some areas onto the transparent glaze,but directly onto and completely covering the red enameled feathers. Of the several different shapes available, the bunrin or 'bulb' shape' is perhaps the rarest. A rich burnt umber glaze with accents of blue around the neck. Two mukozuke dishes - appetizer dishes used in the were used as part of the service to serve the kaiseki meal, part of the formal tea ceremony. Both dishes are glazed in a soft tan crackle glaze that is very possibly Karatsu pottery, although we have not encountered Karatsu that also has an overglaze element in the design such as that in these two dishes.
