One must hold this raku cup to appreciate the subtle tactile pleasure of the various surfaces of the glaze. From perfectly smooth to the raspy feel of sharkskin. At several places the black glaze blushes to a deep brown. The ungulating rim and deliberate uneven surface of the cup are all signs of a master potter. Lavishly decorated elegant incense box. Enameled in black,peacock blue, green and red. Gold glaze was applied in some areas onto the transparent glaze,but directly onto and completely covering the red enameled feathers. Now some of the gold glaze has worn away and part of the red enamel can be seen. On close examination the other enamels show minute pitting and rubbing. Delicate hand-painted circular details with thick raised relief gold outlines adorn the black base coat lacquer. The large body and lid are turned wood coated in urushi or lacquer.
